Wanaka

From Dunedin we drove to Lake Wanaka to stay at Nick's "Bach" (holiday house/cabin) for a few days. There is a very strong Scottish influence in the south (Dunedin means new Edinburgh in Gaelic) as you can see by the random bag-piper outside a pharmacy in a small town we drove through. Unlike the Trans-Canada Highway, in NZ the motorway doesn't bypass any towns, so you get to see them all, which is actually pretty cool to see country kiwiana in these cute little places. The scenery in and around Wanaka was just awesome. In winter it is a popular ski area, so it was strange to see mountains without whitecaps on them. But it was completely different than our Rockies, as was the scenery around Queenstown (next post). Nick took us for a "relaxing" 4WD down the rocky beach which super fun, we and the vehicle made it out alive! We then had burgers and beer and watched the rugby of course, and had an all around bloody good time!

Next stop...Queenstown!
